Description

Former building of Land Loan Partnership (currently – residential building. Reconstructions 1809-1811; 1821-1822; 1893-1895, partly in 1950s). Empire style. The building was constructed in the city centre on the west side of Svobody avenue on the corner with Copernicus street. The building is made of bricks, three floors with tile made roof, L-shaped with inner yard.

History

Being situated on the corner of Svobody ave. and Copernicus str. it was built in two stages by the project of unknown architect. In 1809-1811 left side was built (Copernicus str. side) and in 1821-1822 the right side (Svobody ave. side). Initially this building was owned by trade-banking company “Gausner and Violand” (so called Gausner stone house). In 1845 it was acquired by Land Loan Partnership and owned till 1939. Austrian gubernator Karol Ludvig lived here in 1853-1855. His arrival to Lviv was celebrated with fireworks on Svobody ave. which was named after him for some time. In 1930s here lived Polish nobleman Vojcech Didushytsky and in the end of 1940s by the project of Mykulyn third floor was built.

Architecture

This building is one of the best examples of Empire style buildings in Lviv.

Facades are symmetrical. Developed cornice above the third floor and a line above the ground floor divide the building into three horizontal levels.

The main façade (from Svobody ave.) is vertically divided by two symmetrically located ledges with column porticos, balconies (on a first floor) and pilasters. Through passages in ledges provide access to the inner yard.
Facades are decorated with ornamental and figure relief topics on Greek mythology (authors Vitver and Shimser). Rectangular windows are decorated with a profile frames, cornices and frontons.
On one side relief “Amur and Psyche” (arch. Vitver) is depicted. Another relief is “Eney saves his father” and “Paris kidnaps Elena”. Above the reliefs is a frieze with puttos (figures of boys). Below the balconies on the first floor are Doric order columns and consoles in the form of Atlantes. This building was designed with the influence of Vienna architecture of early XIX c. Its` facade decorations are considered to be one of the finest example of Empire style in the city.
